"She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly".

She was returning Friday from the London leg of a tour promoting her headline-grabbing memoir "The Princess Diarist" when she collapsed 15 minutes before landing in Los Angeles, where paramedics and hospital staff were unable to revive her.

"To me there's Carrie and there's Carrie Fisher", she explained, "and Carrie has to make sure Carrie Fisher gets enough sleep so Carrie Fisher can do her show, [because] Carrie wants to go shopping".

In the televised version of Carrie Fisher's one-woman show, Wishful Drinking - released as an HBO documentary in 2010 - Fisher makes her way around a stage that's been arranged to look like a cozy living room, absolutely spilling her shit.

The fame, however, came with a price and her personal life was dogged by failed relationships, mental health issues, and drug and alcohol abuse.

The actress and writer is best known for her portrayal in Star Wars as Princess Leia.

"In "Star Wars" she was our great and powerful princess - feisty, wise and full of hope in a role that was more hard than most people think", he added. Abrams, who wrote, "You didn't need to meet Carrie Fisher to understand her power".

Fisher appeared in the original Star Wars trilogy and only recently in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a sequel released previous year.

She told People magazine: "It was so intense". The obit wrapped up: "Ms. Fisher established Princess Leia as a damsel who could very much deal with her own distress, whether facing down the villainy of the dreaded Darth Vader or the romantic interests of the roguish smuggler Han Solo".

She appeared in many other films, including The Blues Brothers and When Harry Met Sally. She was also a script writer/doctor (Hook, Sister Act and The Wedding Singer).

Fisher was briefly married to singer/songwriter Paul Simon in the 1980s.

Family spokesman Simon Halls released a statement on behalf of Carrie's daughter, Billie Lourd.

She had a number of minor roles in various films but she found herself unable to recapture the profile that Star Wars had given her.
