Apple Launches Original TV With 'Shark Tank' Reality Show For App Creators

Apple's upcoming TV show will include an actual 'escalator pitch'

The guys over recode were given a trailer for the new Planet of the Apps show which they shared on Twitter, you can see the trailer below. But given how many people like shows like Shark Tank (while the ABC series' fall finale last December saw a significant drop in ratings, it still drew in a healthy 4.9 million viewers) Planet of the Apps may just have an audience. Planet of the Apps will feature entrepreneurs Jessica Alba, Gary Vaynerchuk, Gwyneth Paltrow and as advisors who will vet developers' ideas for the next big app.

Cue made the comments during the Code Media conference Cue said that technology companies have a special responsibility to members of the public, most of whom now depend upon personal devices to receive their news. Instead of starting from scratch with some very bad idea that managed to sell Apple execs on, Apple bought James Corden's Carpool Karaoke and is turning it into a standalone series. The model is already working for Netflix and Amazon Prime, and if Apple plays its cards right, it'll work for Apple Music, too.

Cue also clarified Apple's views when it comes to artist exclusives, suggesting that they are fine as time-limited promotions, but that the company accepts that longer-term windowing of an artist's new album or entire catalogue to one service is "never good" for the wider industry. "In terms of owning content and creating content, we have started with focusing on some original content, as you point out", said Cook, according to a Seeking Alpha transcript. If the panelist is interested, they will swipe right for yes, left for no (sounds like this show was inspired by Tinder).

Basically the show involves app developers pitching ideas to these four celebrities in hopes that their idea gets chosen.

"We're trying different things".

If the premise sounds familiar, that's because it's an unabashed cross between the USA primetime competition shows Shark Tank and The Voice. If LightSpeed agrees to fund the app, it will be featured on Apple's app store. "We're going to revolutionize social media!"

Despite all the rumors surrounding the iPhone 8, Apple is now working on expanding its empire to be a name that is known for more than just being a smartphone maker. At its launch the TV app integrated with Apple Music so that original content, such as Apple's 808 documentary, could be watched through the TV app rather than just through the Music app.

I think there's a huge resurgence in podcasting. Can we do more and will we do more?

At a Recode event Monday night, the company shared details about two upcoming series that will be available to Apple Music subscribers in the spring. "I think it's great for the music business for there to be competition, and for subscription to grow", he said.

But that's not what we're trying to do.

On being asked if this was a hint about Apple planning to buy out some film studio and getting into making films and TV shows, Cue responded in the negative.
