Mitsubishi teases Eclipse Cross SUV

New Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross named and revealed

Eclipse derives its name from the MMC's popular specialty coupe model sold in the USA from 1989, while Cross is short for crossover. It was unfortunately discontinued back in 2012. The Eclipse Cross will be part of a trio of new crossovers that the automaker plans to bring to markets worldwide, focusing on that hot segment instead of its more familiar coupes, sedans and light trucks. Aside from the brand's three diamond star, the only thing it appears to share with the now-vintage Eclipse sporty coupe is its name. The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross should be bigger than the Outlander Sport (called the RVR in Canada) and smaller than the Outlander.

"Eclipse is a word used to describe an astronomical event", the Japanese automaker continued. The Japanese vehicle manufacturer was able to churn out four generations of the auto. One of the most interesting ones that have been released so far is a set of photos from Mitsubishi, which actually gives fans a glimpse of its new compact SUV, the 2017 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. Fans of the sports auto would know that the second generation Eclipse was featured and immortalized in the 2001 movie "The Fast and the Furious" and driven by Brian O'Connor played by the late Paul Walker.

Full details on the Eclipse Cross will have to wait until its official reveal, but we do know that engineering for this new model was done in-house by Mitsubishi, with no help from its new corporate partner Nissan.
