South Korea military: North Korea fires unidentified projectile into sea

The missile was the first test since Donald Trump took office on January 20. Without more pressure from China, North Korea is unlikely to stop.

The missile, which was launched at Panghyon from North Phyongan Province at 0755 KST and traveled around 500km after a rapid vertical ascent of 550km, has not yet been identified, but appears likely to have been a Rodong-type mid-range missile.

"Just a couple of weeks ago, Washington imposed additional unilateral sanctions on Iran for a similar missile test, so we have to assume that Trump will do something", Newton said.

As reported earlier, on Sunday, North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan. "That's why we think their latest launch (with solid fuel) is a serious development".

A year ago the country conducted numerous tests and launches in its quest to develop a nuclear weapons system capable of hitting the U.S. mainland.

The North tried to launch a Musudan eight times past year but most attempts failed. The weapon is created to carry a nuclear payload.

The United States, Japan and South Korea requested the consultations after North Korea confirmed it had "successfully" tested a ballistic missile yesterday.

He added the regime also seemed to be trying to show off its missile capabilities ahead of former leader Kim Jong-il's 75th birthday on February 16.

In his letter, Gardner outlined four steps for Trump to take to prioritize North Korea.

South Korea and United States officials said the missile, launched on Saturday night, flew east towards the Sea of Japan for about 500km (300 miles). The North Korean regime has been working on longer-range ICBMs despite heavy resistance in the global community. KCNA said the missile was sacked at a high angle in consideration of the safety of neighboring countries. Some analysts say its maximum range could be up to 3,000 kilometers (1,870 miles), while others put it at 1,200 kilometers (750 miles). It already has the technology to make warheads small enough to fit on medium-range Nodong missiles, which can reach Japan and South Korea.

The missile test was a violation of United Nations resolutions, and is part of a long process to develop a strong nuclear weapons program.

The North's leader Kim Jong-Un "expressed great satisfaction over the possession of another powerful nuclear attack means which adds to the tremendous might of the country", state news agency KCNA said. It's not clear when that might happen.

"It's very similar to what they've launched from their submarines in the past", he said.

Previous year the country conducted numerous tests and launches in its quest to develop a nuclear weapons system capable of hitting the USA mainland.

Trump rattled nerves in South Korea and Japan when he made comments on the campaign trail suggesting that the two allies should pay more for their own defense.

The United States would consider a full range of options in response but they would be calibrated to show USA resolve while avoiding escalation, the official said.

But it's unlikely that the meeting will lead to any serious punishment for North Korea, which is already under a slew of United Nations and other global sanctions.
