Adityanath's appointment indicates BJP pursuing Hindutva politics: Opposition

The Prime Minister's insistence on development being the only aim of the Adityanath government appears to be an attempt to allay apprehensions that some quarters may have over the hardline Hindutva mascot taking over as the Chief Minister. Reuters

In a major goof-up on google, Wikipedia declared Yogi Adityanath and Keshav Prasad Maurya, both as the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, just ahead of the meeting of the legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party. His appointment to the chief minister's chair was whispered about even before the elections, and that must have been the thing the BJP high command's observers were harking back to when they said at the end of the day, "We always thought he was the leader".

The BJP marked a thumping victory in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections by winning 324 seats out of 403, thus dislodging the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) from power.

Yogi Adityanath is fondly called a firebrand leader by those of right-wing persuasion and a Hindutva fanatic by critics on the left. Some leaders said that Adityanath's elevation went against the verdict BJP received and contradicted "the spirit of Modi's message" last week in which he said that the government will be of everyone.

New Delhi, Mar.18 (ANI): Hours after Yogi Adityanath was named as the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, the Congress Party said it would be a challenge for the former to fulfil the commitments which were made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the elections campaigning. Yogi's presence on top of the leadership is going to energise the rank and file of the saffron party. A personal connect with UP BJP stalwart Rajnath Singh also appears to have played a role in tilting the scale in his favour.

Yogi had been in the reckoning for the chief minister's post ever since the BJP won the state assembly elections by a landslide.

Religion helped BJP create a larger vote bank than the caste vote banks already present in the state. Born July 1, 1959, in Mohanpura, Ghazipur district, Sinha was inducted as a member of the BJP National Council in 1989.

Driving through Muslim-majority pockets like Azamgarh with sword-brandishing youth screaming his name, Adityanath unleashes the infamous firepower that has provoked massive Hindu-Muslim violence.

This would inadvertently give a huge opportunity to the rival opposition parties, which were lately down in dumps to regroup against Modi and the BJP.

Mayawati and the outgoing chief minister Akhilesh Yadav have the credit of completing a full five-year term.

Charan Singh, who served as CM twice, represented Bhartiya Kranti Dal.
