Airport Delays and Cancellations Ahead of Major Winter Storm

Even in Florida, about three dozen flights had been canceled in Orlando - mostly on flights to the north.

For those planning to take Amtrak, service for the Vermonter is cancelled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Major U.S. carriers scrapped all or most of their flights at the three New York-area airports, LaGuardia Airport, John F. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International, in preparation for the storm.

More than 4,000 flights in the Northeast have been canceled in anticipation of Tuesday's snowstorm.

Most of the flights grounded were by Southwest Airlines, which has called off 880 scheduled Tuesday departures, which is about 22 percent of its flights for the day, as of 9:20 a.m. Acela Express service between New York City and Boston is canceled.

In the NY area, the blizzard was less severe than forecasted, but by early morning the snowfall had picked up. "I can tell you what flights to ask for or grab them myself with the airline, and then when you get up there, they'll see it's already been done".

Delta expects to resume operations with a reduced Tuesday night schedule and flights should return closer to normal on Wednesday.

US Airlines canceled over 5,000 flights Tuesday and 650 have already been scrubbed for Wednesday.

Cancellations were spilling into Wednesday, too.

"All Queens Local, Limited, Select and Express buses are running with delays both directions, due to inclement weather conditions", the MTA said in an alert to riders shortly after 6 a.m. Those flights were largely supposed to operate to cities like Washington and Boston, but that could still affect fliers in Florida. JetBlue, American Airlines, Republic, and United have all waived their regular change fees for travelers affected by Stella; Southwest doesn't charge waive fees in general. Many of them related to the storm.
