Hip-Hop Reacts to Chuck Berry's Death

CHICAGO- JANUARY 01 Chuck Berry performs at the Congress Theater

The musical master died Saturday at his home at age 90. Springsteen's "Born to Run" is rock romance and adventure in the grandest Berry style.

Behind so many great rock bands and rock songs looms the music of Chuck Berry.

"Chuck Berry was the greatest creative force in the birth of Rock & Roll - that's a fact", the Oscar-winning director wrote.

"It's fitting that he was the first person inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as he influenced everyone who has picked up a guitar after him". Mike Douglas then chatted with Chuck Berry about his role in birthing rock and roll.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger also paid tribute to Berry, crediting him as a huge inspiration. RIP." Former US President Bill Clinton, in an official statement on the Clinton Foundation's website, said: "Hillary and I loved Chuck Berry for as long as we can remember. The man was inseparable from his music - both were utterly original and distinctly American. According to reports, he died at his home near Wentzville, Mo., Sat. March 18.

In 1962 he was charged with transporting a minor across state lines for immoral purposes. "I salute you! #rip #chuckberry" St Charles County Police Department said paramedics had tried desperately to save him. Berry switched to Mercury Records in 1966 to boost his career, but the move did little to help. "Johnny B. Goode" was included alongside music by the likes of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart on the golden record launched aboard the Voyager I spacecraft in 1977. He was a recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award as well as a Kennedy Center honoree.

He was still touring as recently as 2014 and his website heralds his first new album in 38 years, which reportedly includes new material, as coming "soon".

Berry, widely considered among rock's the true pioneers - perhaps the truest - wrote and performed bedrock songs of the genre, playing his guitar, in the words he himself wrote, like ringing a bell.

Keith Richards famously said he lifted all of Berry's licks. In a way Chuck Berry inspired a whole generation that has in turn inspired the newer generations. Berry influenced artists like the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Who and Roger Waters and Pink Floyd. Berry had coined a term "motorvatin" as he invented rock "n" roll.
