Delta offers up to $9950 to flyers who give up seats

Overbooking rife but Delta softens the blow for its passengers

Delta has been lauded for the move, which comes in the wake of the violent removal of a United passenger last week.

To avoid such costs, Delta can be generous in incentivising volunteers to leave overbooked flights.

Gate agents are also authorized to offer more now, $2000, up from $800.

Delta denied boarding to about 1,200 passengers in 2016, says Bastian. While the airline would not reveal its payment limits, it did state that it has changed its policy regarding when employees can book a seat on a flight. Delta is giving airport employees permission to offer passengers up to nearly $10,000 in compensation to give up their seats on overbooked flights.

United does not publicly disclose how much gate attendants or supervisors are permitted to offer volunteers, but the company was broadly criticized for not offering more money to lure a volunteer.

That $0.08 is no aberration-Delta has historically paid out the least in cash among the United States airlines when it comes to compensating travelers who get pushed off overbooked flights.

Fowler sits 3rd at Masters: 'Right where I'm supposed to be'
The Masters' biggest leaderboard logjam in 44 years could begin to get sorted out now that the four co-leaders have teed off. The 23-year-old Texan had a two-shot lead with 11 holes to play in his debut in 2014 before Bubba Watson overtook him.

For the past few years, Delta Air Lines has surpassed its competition, United Airlines and American Airlines, in bumping far fewer passengers involuntarily while persuading more passengers to voluntarily fly standby.

In 2014, according to a report by broadcaster PBS, 96 of every 100,000 Delta fliers had to take a later flight because the plane was overbooked.

None would describe their limits on paying passengers. A woman named Laura Begley Bloom pocketed a cool $11,000 worth of gift cards when she capitalized on a series of flight delays earlier this month. Delta earned almost $4.4 billion. The travel blog Points, Miles, and Martinis found that only major airports in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Atlanta offered this option.

Passengers receiving the vouchers and miles should get them via email.

When Delta passengers on overbooked flights check in online or at the check-in kiosk, they are asked what the dollar value of the travel voucher they would accept as compensation for volunteering their seats.
