North Korea: Trump's airstrikes in Syria justify its nuclear weapons program

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping 'made tremendous progress' at summit

First lady Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan (puhng LEE'-yoo-en), the wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng), visited a seventh-grade civics class at a Florida middle school.

On Sunday, the White House announced that Trump had spoken by phone with Abe about Syria and "a range of regional issues, including the threat posed by North Korea".

"We had a long discussion already and so far I have gotten nothing, absolutely nothing", Trump joked on Thursday night at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida while dining with Xi, who arrived in the afternoon. The two sides also agreed to a "100-day plan" aimed at reducing the USA trade deficit with China.

U.S. president Donald Trump has said his meetings with China's president Xi Jinping went well but regarding progress on trade "only time will tell".

Mr Trump predicted the summit "will be a very hard one".

Speaking alongside Trump, Xi said the two delegations discussed important topics and established a good friendship and working relationship.

"We have made tremendous progress in our relationship with China", Trump told reporters as the two delegations met around tables flanked by large USA and Chinese flags.

"This coordinated initiative could force North Korea to make real demilitarization concessions, while providing a win for both China and the United States", Markey wrote, adding that China has unsuccessfully urged the U.S. to engage North Korea directly for years.

China's public probably won't regard the strike as a message to their leaders unless the Trump administration makes the case explicitly, said Doug Paal, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington.

"I believe lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away". "I believe we will keep developing in a stable way to form friendly relations ..."

President of China Xi Jinping clarified the firm Chinese position that the country opposes the use of chemical weapon.

Xi offered Trump to visit China later this year, which Trump accepted.

But in a sign that rough spots remained, Tillerson afterwards described the discussions as "very frank and candid". Trump jokingly said he agrees with whatever Xi said.

After the meeting, Trump took Xi on a walk around the manicured grounds of his lavish Spanish-style complex.

In return, Xi hoped to obtain assurances from Trump on punitive tariffs and the delay of an American arms sale to Taiwan, at least until after a major Communist Party meeting later this year.

"This is probably not a welcome development" for Xi and the Chinese "in terms of optics", said Paul Haenle, a USA diplomat who advised George W. Bush and Barack Obama on China policy.

China is ready to enhance law-enforcement cooperation with the USA side, said Xi, calling on the two sides to jointly combat transnational crimes such as drug trafficking, child trafficking, money laundering, cyber crime and organized crime.

"If China shows an uncooperative attitude toward the North Korea nuclear issue", a government source in Seoul said, "Trump has made clear that he intends to actively implement secondary sanctions and is reviewing administrative procedures".

In addition, China says bilateral trade and investment created 2.6 million American jobs in 2015.

USA -backed rebels groups have long pleaded for more US intervention and complained that Washington has only fought the Islamic State group. While Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, described regime change in Syria as a USA priority and inevitable, Tillerson suggested that last week's American airstrikes in retaliation for the chemical attack hadn't really changed USA priorities toward ousting Assad. Putin, a staunch ally of Assad, regarded the USA action as "aggression against a sovereign nation" on a "made-up pretext", spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
