Pearl Jam is inducted into Rock Hall

Eddie Vedder of US rock band Pearl Jam

Friday night, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also inducted ELO, Joan Baez, Journey, Tupac Shakur and Yes.

The choice of Letterman is fitting as the Better Man rockers - Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and Matt Cameron - performed several times on his CBS show. David Letterman will induct Pearl Jam in his stead. Stand up.You can read Letterman's entire speech here, in which he shared an endearing anecdote about Vedder giving Letterman's son a small guitar and also claimed, "These guys, I used to have a television show, they were on my show 10 different times over the years".

Journey's three-song set included "Separate Ways", "Lights", and "Don't Stop Believin'", which Schon dedicated to the band's former singer, according to Ultimate Classic Rock.

Electric Light Orchestra, known for its marriage of rock and classical, brought strings into a cover of Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" before going into the band's most popular song, "Evil Woman". Perry had ditched Journey four years earlier to launch a solo career. "That's right - Tupac got Snoop Dogg smoking blunts", he said to laughs from the audience.

It was talk show veteran David Letterman who inducted the group on Friday night (April 7th 2017), with Neil Young being forced to back out due to an unspecified illness. I feel maybe we're halfway there to deserving an accolade of this kind of stature ...

"I know them as friends as well as cultural icons", Letterman added.

Hitmakers Journey reunited with longtime estranged singer Steve Perry, but only for their induction speech, as the singer has not performed with the band in decades and has only rarely sung in public. Guitarist Nile Rodgers will be given the hall's Award for Musical Excellence, the Hall of Fame said on its website. "I'm ready. I hope you are too". Now, Pearl Jam aren't quite metal (although who can deny their incredible debut album?) but this story does have a metal tinge to it.

The full 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2017 induction ceremony will air on HBO April 29 at 8 p.m.
