Prosecutor rests case in fatal trooper ambush

Trial ending for Pennsylvania man who eluded manhunt in trooper ambush

A Pennsylvania man looking to "spark a revolution" has been found guilty of murdering a State Trooper on Wednesday.

Frein is charged with first-degree murder; first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer; attempted first-degree murder; attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer; assault of a law enforcement officer; two counts each of terrorism and possession of weapons of mass destruction; and one count each of recklessly endangering another person, discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure and possession of an instrument of crime.

Frein was accused of hiding in a forest in September of 2014 and opening fire with a sniper's rifle in an ambush on State Police barracks.

Trooper Alex Douglass, 34, was shot and critically wounded as he rushed to Dickson's side.

Evidence also included a notebook that prosecutors said Frein kept in which he detailed the night of the ambush.

The jury of eight women and four men from Chester County will now consider whether Frein should get the death penalty or spend the rest of his life in prison.

"Eric Frein is a human being, with the qualities of humanity that we all have", defense attorney William Ruzzo said. Dickson was killed and Douglass severely injured. His lawyers offered no evidence or testimony and chose to focus on whether or not Frein will receive the death penalty.

The search involved 1,000 law enforcement officials and spanned more than 300 square miles of the Pocono mountain wilderness in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Tonkin, in his closing argument Wednesday, called Frein "a terrorist with murder in his heart, a plan in his mind and a rifle in his hand".

Tonkin is seeking the death penalty. He says the verdict means "a brutal murderer will be held accountable for his heinous and cowardly acts".

The state has placed a moratorium on executions under Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf.

The dragnet shut down schools and roads and forced several small towns to cancel trick or treating on Halloween.
