Teenager Vondrousova wins 1st WTA title at Biel Ladies Open

"I lost a bit of focus in the second, and she also played really well".

World number 233 Marketa Vondrousova won her first title on Sunday when the 17-year-old defeated Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) in the Biel/Bienne final.

Francesca Schiavone secured her eighth WTA title by defeating Lara Arruabarrena 6-4 7-5 in the final of the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogota.

A scorching victor clinched the opening set, before some aggressive play saw Vondrousova take a 5-2 lead of her own in the second, a deficit that Strycova was unable to recover from.

Qualifier Vondrousova dumped top seed Barbora Strycova out to reach her maiden final and rose to the occasion in Switzerland on Sunday, winning 6-4 7-6 (8-6) to cap a remarkable week. Now I'm playing really great. Now Vondrousova's backed up yesterday's upset over Annika Beck with a win over a player ranked 175 spots above her to prove why team captain Petr Pala made the right choice.

"I just want to play a good game and don't want to think about tomorrow's match being a final. Mentally, I toughed it out".
