Chaffetz followed up with a text saying, "The state needs to figure out how this works".

Chaffetz, 50, in the past had considered running for a U.S. Senate seat. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, decides to retire. Chaffetz, a Republican who chairs the House Over.

Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, on Wednesday said he will not run for reelection in 2018.

He continued: "For those that would speculate otherwise, let me be clear that I have no ulterior motives". Chaffetz repeatedly said, "hold on", and "give me a second", as audience members in a Salt Lake City suburb reacted negatively to almost all of his statements and implored him to "do your job" and investigate Trump.

"My future plans are not yet finalized but I haven't ruled out the possibility of leaving early", Chaffetz told CNN in a text message.

Reacting to the announcement, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, or DCCC, on Wednesday said Chaffetz "crumbled under the weight of the widespread backlash that's he's facing for refusing to do his job".

Attorney Damian Kidd, a Republican who had already stepped in to challenge Chaffetz, said he hopes Chaffetz's exit will free up fundraising money. I have the full support of Speaker Ryan to continue as Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

As head of the panel with oversight of the federal government, Chaffetz has a role in highlighting potential conflicts of interest or abuses of power by President Donald Trump and his administration. "I've been away from my family for more than 1,500 nights, and it's as simple as a fact that I love my wife and I adore my kids and you just gotta reevaluate your life when you're sleeping on a cot in your office", he said.

James Evans, Chair of the Utah Republican Party, says Utah's race won't be so contested.

Days later the Daily News found that Chaffetz campaign committee had itself spent more than $12,000 on phone charges since late 2014.

Hughes and Wright didn't return messages.

On the horizon beyond 2018 is the 2020 gubernatorial race, a contest that will not feature Gov. Gary Herbert, who has said he would not seek another term, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. And like many Republican members of Congress, Chaffetz faced a fiery crowd in a town hall in February.

Chaffetz has also been put in a hard position as Trump demands Congressional investigations for each conspiracy theory de jour he decides is real based on a Fox News report.
