"We are devastated to hear about the sudden passing of Chris Cornell last night", reads the post from Rock on the Range. The Detroit News cited Freeman in a similar report.

Cornell, who had been on tour, died Wednesday night in Detroit, Brian Bumbery said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The musician was in the middle of a tour with Soundgarden, and had been performing a sold-out show at the Fox Theatre just hours before his death.

Chris Cornell's death has been ruled a suicide, USA officials have confirmed.

The 52-year-old Cornell was the lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave.

The School's Out singer said on Thursday: "Chris Cornell, in our circle, was known as The Voice because he had the best voice in rock and roll". His death has been ruled a suicide by medical examiners.

Cornell, a key figure in Seattle's '90s grunge scene, founded Soundgarden in 1984 with guitarist Kim Thayil, drummer Matt Cameron, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto.

Soundgarden bagged Grammys in 1995 for their songs Black Hole Sun and Spoonman. By 2001, he had helped found the supergroup Audioslave with several members of Rage Against the Machine.

Cornell was born in Seattle in 1964. They delivered hit singles such as "Cochise" and "Like a Stone" and their self-titled debut album was nominated for Rock Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. The group performed in Cuba in 2005, billed at the time as the country's first outdoor rock concert by an American band. The band broke up in 2007.

He'd spoken candidly in the past about his experiences of depression, telling Rolling Stone in 2015 that his first solo album, 1999's 'Euphoria Morning' (originally titled 'Euphoria Mourning'), was about a particularly hard time in his life.

The final solo recording released by Cornell was "The Promise", released on May 10.

The Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation raises funds and partners with organizations to support children facing homelessness, poverty and abuse.
