WannaCry Ransomware: Microsoft Calls Out NSA For 'Stockpiling' Vulnerabilities

Dame Fiona and the Care Quality Commission wrote to Mr Hunt to highlight a "lack of understanding of security issues", the newspaper said, and that "the external cyber threat is becoming a bigger consideration".

The WannaCry virus blocks access to the entire computer.

If a system is infected, a pop up window appears, asking you to pay and recover all your files within 3 days, if you fail to pay the fee is double and you are given a window of 7 days, after which, if you fail to make the payment the data will be deleted forever.

The ransomware called Wanna Decrypt, also known as WannaCry, encrypts files on the machine, effectively locking them.

Smith's blog post did not address another factor in the ransomware's spread, one that hints at the difficulty of uniting against a hacking attack: Users of pirated Microsoft software are unable to download the security patch, forcing them to fend for themselves or rely on a third-party source for a solution.

WannaCry takes advantage of a vulnerability discovered by the NSA and made public by hackers in April.

Microsoft released a security patch for the vulnerabilities in March.

Most victims were quickly able to recover infected systems with backups, the group's chief economist, Scott Borg, said.

Elsewhere in Asia, the Indonesian government urged businesses to update computer security after the malware locked patient files on computers in two hospitals in the capital, Jakarta.

Consumers are also at risk.

Straight out of an episode of Mr. Robot, WannaCry (Wcry, WannaCrypt, WanaCrypt0r 2.0, or Wanna Decryptor) is a malicious software package that infects computers running Microsoft Windows.

Proofpoint and a British cybersecurity researcher teamed up on Friday to derail the attack that was said to strike at least 100,000 organisations in 150 countries. FedEx, Nissan, and the United Kingdom's National Health Service were among the victims. A top Russian mobile operator said Friday it had come under cyberattacks that appeared similar to those that have crippled some United Kingdom hospitals.

The effects were felt across the globe, with Britain's National Health Service, Russia's Interior Ministry and companies including Spain's Telefonica, FedEx Corp.in the USA and French carmaker Renault all reporting disruptions.

Tech companies such as Microsoft also have a responsibility to be constantly on guard with cyber security-which also means constant updates on its software systems.

"NCSC and NCA are working with Europol and other global partners to make sure we all collect the right evidence, which we need to do to make sure we have the right material to find out who has done this and we go after them".

Interior Ministry: The Russian Interior Ministry acknowledged a ransomware attack on its computers, adding that less than 1% of computers were affected. Bad guys generally target Windows far more than Apple's operating system because there are vastly more computers running Windows around the world. But the South Korean cinema chain CJ CGV Co. was restoring advertising servers at dozens of theaters after the attack left the company unable to display trailers of upcoming movies. Back up your data on an offline hard drive. 4. "Enable windows update, update and then reboot". Use a reputable security software to prevent attacks in the future.
