Iran's Revolutionary Guard strikes Syria for Tehran attacks

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards stated on Sunday that it has targeted the bases of militant groups in Syria with several missiles.

The missile strikes, which occurred on Saturday, are the first reported ground-to-ground strikes from Iran into Syria since the Arab country descended into a civil war in 2011.

The missiles were fired from western Iran across the border into Deir Ezzor province, in northeastern Syria, targeting what the Guard called "terror bases". Social media was awash in shaky mobile phone footage from those areas, allegedly showing the missiles rise in an orange glow before heading toward their targets. The missiles have reportedly killed large numbers of terrorists and inflicted significant material damage, Tasnim said.

"The spilling of innocent blood will not go unanswered", said the IRGC in a statement.

The Revolutionary Guards are fighting in Syria against militant groups who oppose President Bashar al-Assad.

Islamic State issued a statement claiming responsibility for the Tehran attack.

The Islamic State launched two coordinated attacks against Iran's Parliament and tomb of Ayatollah Khomeini on June 7 in Tehran.

The Guard warned ISIL militants and their "regional and worldwide supporters" that similar retaliatory attacks would target them as well if another assault in Iran occurred.
