Is Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor hurting the Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev rematch?

You- get prepared’ Kovalev points grave warning to Ward walks out of press conference

In a rematch to one of the most controversial world title fights of 2016, Ward and Kovalev had another battle in Las Vegas for the unified light heavyweight championship.

This is how it went in the light heavyweight match-up of arguably the two best men in the sport, who ascended to those spots by facing each other in a close fight a year ago that Ward won controversially: Kovalev started better.

With another close round taking place in the 8th round, Ward uncorked a hellacious right hand that clearly took Kovalev's legs from underneath him. "It didn't hurt like I could go down on the floor but it was a low blow", Kovalev said.

"He's a great fighter, not a lot of people are going to beat him", Ward said.

As Kovalev lurched around the ring, Ward trapped him in the corner and rammed in a succession of shots around the belt line and the shaken fighter was sagging on the ropes as Weeks swiftly signalled the finish. The end officially came at 2:29 of the eighth allowing Ward to retain his IBF, WBA and WBO light heavyweight world titles at Mandalay Bay Events Center. But there were a couple of times when I was crying, because I thought we'd have to postpone the fight. Why stop the fight?

From there, Kovalev - who grew more anxious over the course of the bout, no doubt contributing to his stamina fade - didn't seem to want to be in the fight anymore. It was anyone's fight going into the eighth round, with the AP having Kovalev ahead by a point, until Ward landed the right hand that proved the difference.

In the first round, Kovalev, a 34-year-old native of Russian Federation, aggressively took the center of the ring while Ward alternated between traveling to his left or traveling to his right. Kovalev, a former champion, will receive a percentage of the pay-per-view TV revenue, likely far less than what Ward received.

As CBS Sports noted, it is expected to be a very close bout again but Ward can again seize the advantage if he dictates the style of the fight.

Many did think Kovalev won, however.

Ah, but those low blows. Whether the punches that came right before the end of the fight were low or not can be discussed. Now he's a good kid, I do him and he's swell but I'm telling you.

Ward and Kovalev have previously met, battling out on November 19 past year.

When asked what's next for the undefeated Ward, he said he will possibly move to cruiserweight, or heavyweight. I knew he was hurt.

Andre Ward has brushed aside claims his win against Sergey Kovalev was overshadowed by a questionable stoppage decision.

'Kovalev also was probably up in the fight, at least by a little bit.
