Judy Murray and Heather Stanning awarded OBEs in Queen's Birthday Honours

Alongside the New Year Honours list, the awards recognise the achievements and service of people across the United Kingdom, from all walks of life. Paul McCartney and J.K. Rowling just got promoted, so to speak, in Britain's hiera. PC Keith Palmer, the police officer murdered in the Westminster terror attack earlier this year, has been given a posthumous bravery award, recognising the lives that he saved that day.

This major honour is conferred by the Queen and on the advice of Government in recognition of significant achievements in science and medicine, charitable work, business, sport and public service.

The Queen's annual Birthday Honours list includes a special title for Ed: MBE, which stands for Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

"It is an honour that could not be more deserved and I know it will mean a great deal to all those who knew and loved him".

Ireland rugby captain Rory Best has also been awarded an OBE for his services to the sport, having racked up 104 caps for his country and playing 13 years with Ulster.

Those honoured from the world of entertainment include chart-topper Ed Sheeran and comedian David Walliams, with the honours committee describing the list as the most diverse yet.

Caroline Oakley has worked in nursing for almost 37 years and will receive an MBE for services to the nursing profession and NHS Wales from Her Majesty the Queen.

Michelle said: "I am both delighted and honoured to be recognised in this way". Julie Walters has been appointed a Dame, alongside fellow actress June Whitfield and funnyman Billy Connelly.

Of the 1109 people receiving awards, 554 are women and 10 per cent are from ethnic minorities, she said.

Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire and Miranda actress Patricia Hodge both receive OBEs for services to drama.

He is one of a number of sporting figures to have received awards, including Judy Murray, rower Heather Stanning and former world light-heavyweight champion John Conteh.

The 77-year-old presenter lost her daughter Caron, who was also a TV presenter, to breast cancer in 2004.

The Pewsey man was also honoured for his time as a Magistrate and he later became Chairman of the Bench.
