Russia condemns US downing of Syrian warplane

Pentagon US shoots down Syrian fighter jet

The Syrian plane was shot down by a U.S. Navy fighter jet after attempting to bomb U.S. -allied coalition forces, according to the U.S. military.

The US did not use its communication channel with Russian Federation ahead of the downing of the Syrian government warplane, the ministry was quoted as saying.

The missile attack came amid recent confrontations in Syria between US -backed forces and Iranian-backed pro-government factions.

A statement from US Central Command said that the plane was shot down because it dropped bombs on US-backed rebels from the Syrian Democratic Front, near Tabqa in north Syria.

The Kurdish-led SDF - which is aligned with the U.S. in the campaign against IS - had warned Syrian government forces to stop their attacks or face retaliation. The Syrian regime and its allies have began increasingly targeting the SDF, who control valuable territory inside Syria. The Syrian jet was destroyed by the attack.

"Any aircraft, including planes and drones of the global coalition, detected in the operation areas west of the Euphrates River by the Russian air forces will be followed by Russian ground-based air defense and air defense aircraft as air targets", Russia's defense ministry declared.

US warplanes carried out several low passes over the Ja'Din, halting the attack by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"This strike can be regarded as another act of defiance of global law by the United States", Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Monday, according to Russia's state-run news agency Tass.

Russia, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, called on the USA military to provide a full accounting as to why it made a decision to shoot down the Syrian Su-22 bomber.

In a high-profile incident in May US planes struck Syrian pro-regime forces, which they said threatened US partner forces that were being trained near Tanf in southern Syria.

Government forces and their allies are working in eastern areas, and have clashed with the U.S. and their partners as they carry out operations. American forces responded by immediately shooting down the Syrian aircraft.

"The regime's forces.have mounted large-scale attacks using planes, artillery, and tanks", SDF spokesman Talal Selo said in a statement.

A number of SDF forces were wounded in the attack, the statement from the Combined Joint Task Force said.

"If the regime continues attacking our positions in Raqqa province, we will be forced to retaliate.and defend our forces".
