To North Korea and back: Otto Warmbier's strange, sad trip

Joseph Yun, the point man on North Korea for President Donald Trump's administration, went to Pyongyang on Monday and left on a USA military medical evacuation plane with Warmbier on Tuesday afternoon, just a few hours after Rodman arrived.

The three prisoners left in North Korea are Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim, both university professors, and Kim Dong Chul a businessman.

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman, vowing to return soon, on Saturday wrapped up a low-key and incident-free visit to the North Korean capital.

Rodman also visited iconic North Korean monuments and coached a womens basketball team. "This is pretty much what happened in this case", Lankov said.

Experts said it was unlikely North Korea would have intentionally put a detained American into a coma.

Rodman was widely criticized for singing happy birthday to Kim Jong Un from the basketball court during a trip to the isolated state in 2014, and also for an angry and apparently drunken television interview in which he suggested that an American imprisoned in North Korea had deserved his punishment. "I'm so upset at the way they behaved with Otto, because I got personally involved with this".

Yun boarded a private aircraft along with two doctors and arrived last Monday in Pyongyang, where they were met by North Korean officials and saw Warmbier in a hospital. The next day, Warmbier was flown to a US base in Japan before making the longer journey to OH to be reunited with his family.

North Korean officials maintain they will not abandon their nuclear program altogether but may be open to limiting its scope or temporary halts, the Journal reported. He hasn't spoken to the media since returning and US officials have referred most questions to Warmbier's family.

"The tragedy is he is not well", the founder of The Richardson Center told Sunday's "The Cats Roundtable".

But Yun managed to see the other three detained Americans while in Pyongyang, providing the US with much-sought information about their condition. Anton said there is no connection between Rodman's visit and Warmbier's release.

On Thursday, The Washington Post asked Otto's father, Fred, about the Obama administration's efforts on behalf of his son.
