US college student released by North Korea arrives in Ohio

Dennis Rodman

Warmbier, a 21-year-old University of Virginia student, was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in North Korea in March 2016 after being accused of attempting to steal a propaganda poster from his Pyongyang hotel room while visiting the country. In 2013, ahead of his first trip, I wrote a tipsheet for Rodman on the vile record of the North Korean regime. And how does the Trump administration respond?

While the release of the US citizen might send a signal about eased tensions between Pyongyang and Washington, the DPRK Monday also expressed nostalgia for a period of relaxed relations with South Korea from 2000 to 2007, by marking the signing of the historic 2000 North-South Joint Declaration on inter-Korean relations.

Warmbier's release came as former USA basketball star Dennis Rodman arrived in North Korea on Tuesday, returning to the increasingly isolated nuclear-armed country where he previously met leader Kim Jong Un.

The release of the University of Virginia student was secured on the same day former basketball superstar Dennis Rodman, known for his flamboyant behavior, and personal connections both with Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, arrived in Pyongyang.

North Korea is not to be trusted, either in what it says or what it does.

Otto Warmbier, 22, is now on his way back to the U.S. where he will be reunited with his family, Tillerson said in a statement. North Korea on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, is expecting another visit by Rodman, who has made several trips to the country but has been criticized for insensitive comments and for regaling leader Kim Jong Un with "Happy Birthday" in 2014. Obviously it's weird that he would contract it just after he was sentenced to fifteen years hard labour by the North Korean state, but there's not a whole lot else to go off right now. He was charged with "hostile acts against the state".

After a short trial on 16 March, Mr Warmbier was given a 15-year prison sentence for crimes against the state.

North Korea regularly accuses Washington and Seoul of sending spies to overthrow its government to enable the US -backed South Korean government to take control of the Korean Peninsula.

Rodman's North Korea visits over the years have fueled speculation he could facilitate a diplomatic breakthrough between Pyongyang and Washington. A North Korean foreign ministry official confirmed that Warmbier was released and left the country Tuesday morning.

But back in Pyongyang, the Swedes were allowed to see only one detainee, and it wasn't Warmbier. "This is wrong", David Lee, one of the men who said he studied with Kim, told CNN.

"This system imposes unduly harsh sentences for actions that would not be considered crimes in the United States and threatens USA citizen detainees with being treated in accordance with 'wartime law of the DPRK'". The official referred to them as "hostages". "American and medical officials would get out".

University President Teresa Sullivan said in a statement that the school is relieved to hear Warmbier was released, but is concerned about his condition. They were immediately taken to Warmbier.

He was met by North Korean Vice Minister of Sports Son Kwang Ho.

In Seoul, South Korea, U.S. Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon said "we pray for him and we pray for his family".

Joseph Yun was told about Warmbier's condition on June 6, 2017, in a meeting he had with North Korean officials in NY.

Two women waiting outside the airport fence held signs: "WELCOME HOME OTTO" and "PRAYERS FOR OTTO", and said they were there to support his family. According to Warmbier's parents, their son was medically evacuated from North Korea in a coma, which he has reportedly been in for over a year after falling ill to botulism and then being given a sleeping pill. "We'll be relieved to have him home and are looking forward to surrounding him with people who love him". Thousands of USA troops are based in South Korea, and the Demilitarized Zone between the North and South is one of the most heavily fortified borders in the world.

North Korean representatives at the United Nations did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

The unemployment rate stood at 3.6 percent last month, down 0.1 percentage point from the same month past year, according to the report compiled by Statistics Korea.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that the State Department secured Warmbier's release at the direction of President Donald Trump.

The three are businessman Kim Dong Chul, arrested in April 2016, and two academics at the Western-funded, private Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, Tony Kim and Kim Hak-Song, arrested in April and May this year.
