In the course of Thursday night's charity game, which drew a record attendance to Nationals Park, MedStar hospital issued a new update on Scalise's condition, saying that the lawmaker "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

Scalise was one of five people shot when a gunman opened fire Wednesday as the Republican team practiced in Alexandria, Virginia. The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Scalise's hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way.

Trump said the universal support for Scalise and others wounded in the shooting might help heal the country's many political differences. Long-ago Little Leaguers now in Congress don their spikes and dust off their gloves in a game played for claiming top dog status and to benefit several charities.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Dr. Sava said at a press conference. But he will remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time" and faces additional operations.

Capitol Police officer David Bailey, who was injured during the shooting on Wednesday, threw out the first pitch while baseball legend Joe Torre stood next to him. U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.), who visited Scalise in the hospital Thursday, said that on a recent foreign trip he and Scalise took, 90 percent of their conversations were about the game.

"Our family asks that you continue to pray for Steve, Matt Mika, Zach Barth, and all of those hurt in this attack, and keep them in your thoughts as they face recovery".

"He's going to be OK, we hope", President Trump said. Most say they don't need extra security, while others say for certain events, they wouldn't mind the extra security.

Everyone - Republican, Democrat - was on their feet, paying their respects to the man who is still fighting for his life in MedStar Washington Medical Center.

She said she was married to James Hodgkinson for almost 30 years but they have not been together since March, when he moved to Washington, D.C.

The president made his comments as he spoke in Miami to announce a new policy on Cuba.

He's been sedated since then, Sava said, "but we've been able to turn that sedation down enough for him to respond to his family members, and he clearly knows that they're there and appreciates their presence". When it came time to introduce Rep. Scalise and his face flashed on the jumbotron, the stadium went nuts.

Huffman, a lanky former All-American volleyball player at UC Santa Barbara and USA Volleyball Team member, is playing third base and batting second for the Democrats.

Instead of wearing hats representing their home teams, as is the normal tradition, players on both teams wore Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, for part of the game.
