Altidore on biting incident: 'My girl's mad at me'

Arena Makes Six Changes To Gold Cup Roster

Striker Jozy Altidore seemed to be bitten by Henry Romero and defender Omar Gonzalez by Darwin Ceren in a similar incident during the Gold Cup quarter-final, which the U.S. won 2-0.

"My girl's mad at me", he told reporters, via the New York Post. Altidore said he had never been bitten before, at least not without his permission. "That's insane. [Nipple twisting], that should be allowed, but the biting, no good".

Defenders Omar Gonzalez and Eric Lichaj scored for the US, who advance to face Costa Rica in the semifinals of the tournament for CONCACAF supremacy.

Aside from Bradley's set-piece delivery on Gonzalez's goal and Howard's bailout of Lichaj, they had little effect on the USMNT other than making them look a bit out of sorts.

Altidore wasn't the only American player to receive such treatment, as minutes later Gonzalez was bitten by El Salvador captain Darwin Ceren.

"I thought we had a hard time tonight", Arena said.

USA team-mate Tim Howard has seen the amusing side however.

Too many poor touches, like when he banged Morrow's throw-in out of bounds. "Just move on from it, learn from it, and get ready for the next game".

In a game the United States were heavily favored, in a tournament they expect to contest the final at the very least, this was no masterclass from by Bruce Arena's men.

US - semi-finalists in 2015 - had two unlikely players to thank, defenders Omar Gonzalez and Eric Lichaj, for the quarter-final victory in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

In the past, the world of worldwide soccer has seen players go above and beyond the call of duty, as well as general morality, in hopes of securing a win for their teams.

But even though the squad is different, the memory lingers of the US getting hammered by Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying late a year ago and there is universal recognition that a start similar to what took place against El Salvador will be more damaging.

M GYASI ZARDES, 6: Had his moments creating danger from the left side, and was unlucky to see his first-half strike flagged for offside.

"It's never happened to me before, but Concacaf never ceases to amaze me", he added.

The U.S., unbeaten in 12 games under coach Bruce Arena, will play Costa Rica on Saturday in Arlington, Texas.

The ex-Sunderland striker subsequently joked that defender Henry Romero's underhand tactics had even offended his girlfriend.
