Apple to Abandon TouchID in iPhone 8

Top Analyst The 'iPhone 8' Won't Feature Touch ID In Screen

The first is that Apple Pay could either be a lot less convenient to use on the iPhone 8 if, for example, it requires that one scan her or his face for identification, or if it requires that one enter in his or her device passcode when making a transaction.

The iPhone 8 will likely omit the Touch ID fingerprint recognition system altogether, according to KGI industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. "Apple is reportedly in talks with LG Display to invest about KRW 2 to 3 trillion ($1.75-2.62 billion) into the South Korean display maker's new OLED production lines exclusively dedicated to Apple orders", the report says. - To work around this, according to Kuo the front camera system on the iPhone 8 will support 3D depth sensing, enabling facial recognition authentication and "improved" selfies.

The one prediction that some may have difficulty with is that Apple will exclusively rely on 3D Sensing based facial recognition instead of Touch ID. Samsung's feature on its Galaxy S8 smartphone launched to poor reviews as users were able to trick the sensor with printed photo copies of a person's eyes.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is now testing using 3D facial detection as a replacement for Touch ID fingerprint authentication. The AI chip is internally called the Apple Neural Engine and would improve battery life by handling tasks like image recognition and typing suggestions, Bloomberg News reported in May. The new phone will have glass on both the front and back that curves at the edges.

This adds credibility to other reports that showed that Apple has been working on a variant that features a fingerprint reader relegated to the back of the phone, below the Apple logo.

It's believed Apple will release two iPhone models in September, an iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus that will be minor updates to Apple's current iPhone 7 offerings as well as an all new, dramatically redesigned iPhone 8.

Apple's stock is trading up 24% year-to-date.
