Horse Dies From West Nile in Virginia

Virginia Reports First Equine WNV Case of 2017

The Boston Public Health Commission announced Tuesday that a mosquito pool in the Roslindale neighborhood tested positive for the virus.

The Saddlebred gelding from Wythe County was euthanized because of the severity of his symptoms and positive results for the virus were confirmed on July 7.

Dauphin County is reporting the summer's first two cases of mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus. "The disease is usually preventable by vaccinations, as is Eastern Equine Encephalitis, so many veterinarians recommend vaccination at least yearly, and in mosquito-prone areas, every six months".

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reminding residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

Sixteen cases of WNV infection occurred in MA past year, according to the Dept. of Public Health.

Supportive therapies can be used to maintain hydration levels and prevent injury to the animal.
