McCain's surgery leaves Senate with no schedule for Obamacare repeal vote

Senate GOP Leaders Release Revised Draft of Health Bill

The Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, has already announced that votes on a bill to dismantle the Affordable Care Act will not begin until Mr. McCain's return.

A half-dozen key senators, including McCain, were undecided on whether to go ahead with a procedural vote, putting the bill's future in serious jeopardy before McConnell punted.

A vocal conservative opponent of the measure, Sen. Already, two GOP senators-Susan Collins from ME and Rand Paul from Kentucky-have pledged not to vote for the new bill, and McConnell can't afford to lose any more senators, including McCain, to pass the bill. "The longer the bill's out there, the more conservative Republicans are going to discover that it's not repeal", the Kentucky senator said Sunday on CBS's Face the Nation.

Failure to pass the bill would mark a humiliating defeat for Republicans who have spent much of the past seven years vowing to kill off Obamacare. The state executives, some of whom accepted expanded Obamacare Medicaid subsidies, have argued against the inclusion of deep cuts to the program.

Senate Republican leaders are pushing ahead for a vote soon on their contentious plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.

"(Sen. McCain) appreciates the tremendous professionalism and care by its doctors and staff", McCain's office said in a statement released July 15. It's hard to think of any recent policy measure that's united every possible faction of the industry, including insurers, but the GOP bill has managed to pull it off.

"I don't know whether it will pass, but I do know this, we should not be making fundamental changes in a vital safety net program that's been on the books for 50 years - the Medicaid program - without having a single hearing to evaluate what the consequences are going to be", she added.

When asked by Todd near the beginning of the interview what it says about the bill that the vote is so close that they need McCain's vote to move forward, Cornyn decried that the bill has "become a partisan issue", stating, "our Democratic friends are refusing to lift a finger to help their burdened constituents who are being hurt". "In the meantime, Cheryl and I extend our best wishes to John, Cindy and the entire McCain family and pray for his speedy recovery".

It's expected that by keeping some of the taxes for the wealthy, leadership may have more money to dole out in upcoming days as they try to make a deal.

It was the second time that McConnell was forced to call off a planned vote, even with heavy lobbying by Trump administration officials. A previous assessment said 22 million people would lose their insurance by 2026, and a new score is expected on Tuesday or later this week.

After a routine annual physical, McCain underwent a procedure Friday at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix to remove a blood clot from above his left eye, his office said in a news release.

Axios reports that the White House considers every day without a third Senate defection a victory.

Without McCain, the current version of Trumpcare - officially titled the Better Care Reconciliation Act - can not pass the Senate. McCain was reported to be resting comfortably at his home in Arizona.

In 2000, McCain was diagnosed with melanoma.

The Senate floor schedule is unclear now that health care is on hold.
