On Thursday, Hamburg police said that a total of 13,970 people gathered at various anti-G20 protests across Hamburg on Wednesday.

The first lady tweeted about the violent protests early Friday morning that left 130 police officers injured the day before.

A new free trade deal between Japan and the EU, announced on the eve of the summit, was seen as a not-so-subtle rebuke of Trump's protectionist policies and the recent Brexit vote. After the cameras snapped away, Merkel, in the center, dismissed the group with a firm nod of the head.

Global economic growth - Although the G20 deliberations themselves take place in a confidential setting, trade has always been a permanent item on the agenda at the Summit.

"As we deny physical space to terrorists to operate in theatre, we must outpace the terrorist methodology as it develops to attack other vulnerable targets and increases inspired attacks".

Russia wants the return the two compounds in New York and Maryland that were seized by the Obama administration as punishment for election meddling.

There were some 30 arrests.

"Hamburg has adjusted to the flows of globalization for hundreds of years", Voepel said.

Progress on such questions-unlikely to feature among the concluding annoucements here in Hamburg tomorrow-matters so much because we are in what the political scientist Ian Bremmer calls a "G-Zero" world; one in which no country or bloc can shape or direct global events. The question that comes to my mind is whether she will have enough time to spare for Africa's perennial economic problems.
