Sinkhole swallows homes in Florida, forces evacuation

A house destroyed by the sinkhole on Ocean Pines Drive in Land O Lakes Florida

Dramatic video showed the home, north of Tampa in Pasco County, collapsing into the hole on Friday morning. Someone had called about a "depression" under a boat parked next to the house in Lake Padgett Estates in Land O' Lakes.

Pasco Emergency Management, Pasco Fire Rescue, Duke Energy, Pasco Building Inspector and Pasco County PIO are all responding to the scene. A secondary structure is now impacted as the hole continues to grow. The boat fell in.

The sinkhole started out as the size of a small swimming pool but keeps growing.

A Florida home has been swallowed up by the ground where a previous sinkhole had been stabilised. Authorities said there have been no reported injuries.

By 9:30 am (local time) the home had fallen into the sinkhole. The home last sold in 2015, according to records.

Property records note a sinkhole confirmed in 2012 as "stabilised". No one was home at the time, the owners had already gone to work. "Mother Nature is going to take what Mother Nature takes".

Officials have set up a 200-foot-wide buffer around the hole as a safety precaution.
