'Don't Believe Rumours,' Says Delhi Police Ahead Of Ram Rahim Sentencing

Indian sect leader whose rape conviction sparked violent protests to be sentenced Monday

The court directed Punjab and Haryana governments to set up Special Investigation Teams (SITs) of three officers, headed by an officer not below the rank of an Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), to investigate all the cases registered at various places in connection with the Dera violence.

Few details were immediately available following the sentencing, but the guru's lawyers can appeal the verdict to a higher court. The Haryana government has faced severe criticism from opposition Congress and a state court for failing to stop the rioting and vandalism.

"Bravo to d women, CBI court & Justice Singh".

However, the judges did not agree.

"Some people are still inside the Dera in Sirsa... they are slowly coming out". The Punjab & Haryana High Court ordered periodical monitoring of Dera activities.

Gupta further observed that when mob mentality comes and threatens everything, there has to be a hard response.

Judge Jagdeep Singh said in his order that Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's assault of his disciples was "custodial rape" and he "deserved maximum punishment".

The CBI court has also slapped a fine of Rs 30 lakh on him out of which Rs 14 lakh each will be provided as compensation to the two victims.

2014: Reports of arms training being given to followers at the Dera emerge.

Singh, known as the "guru of bling" on account of his flamboyant lifestyle, commands a vast and loyal support base throughout the region, and while no new clashes were reported over the weekend, security remains tight, with internet and SMS services shut down in parts of both Punjab and Haryana states until Tuesday. "We are on our toes 24x7 and we are 100 per cent certain that there will be no untoward incident tomorrow", he said. No reports of violence were recorded after the announcement of court's decision as the army had clear orders to shoot at sight in case of any disturbance by his followers.

Mahajan, however, submitted that the forces had controlled the situation within two hours.

According to sources, Honeypreet accompanied Gurmeet Ram Rahim in the helicopter provided by the state government to transport him to Rohtak for the hearing on Friday. Almost 1000 dera followers have been arrested so far since Friday.

Apart from the rape charges against him, Ram Rahim Singh denies charges of murder in two cases due to be heard next month. Inflammable materials and chemicals were also recovered from a fire truck that was part of Gurmeet Ram Rahim's cavalcade on Friday.

"The bench said it never uttered any word against the prime minister".
