The adaptation of Stephen King's 1986 novel broke several box office records as it opened to a massive $117.2 million in the USA and Canada, according to studio estimates. It, a new adaptation of the fantastic Stephen King book after the movie cult of the 90s, has dominated the u.s. box office for its output.

For context: Prior to It, the top opening weekend for an R-rated horror movie belonged to Paranormal Activity 3, which earned $52.6 million in 2011.

When it comes to R-rated films, the biggest opening was none other than Deadpool, setting the bar at $132.4 million.

We know we said "10 times", but it's really closer to 13 times (rounding up a little) according to the quick calculation we just ran, which is scarily appropriate for a horror movie, pun fully intended.

Audience scores are as high as they get for the horror genre so positive word-of-mouth will lead to plenty of more business ahead. Compare that to Beauty and the Beast, which was rocking a $160 million budget, or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's $200 million budget, and IT easily has had the most profitable opening weekend of the year, and its overall gross could be just getting started.

Despite intense horror competition, the fright flick Annabelle: Creation held up quite well in its fifth weekend dropping 47% for the second best hold for any wide release this weekend.

The movie's success over the weekend was spectacular considering the project cost only $35 million to produce.

IT also received positive reviews, including 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ CinemaScore. Before that, there was Hotel Transylvania 2 at $48.5 million. Most box office analysts were predicting that the film, which stars Bill Skarsgård as the terrifying clown Pennywise, would open in the $70 million to $80 million range. Wonder Woman's worldwide total is now $816 million.

Dunkirk dropped 55% to an estimated $2M putting Warner $183.1M. Flying past $900M in the end seems very likely - a popular hangout for movies which include Iron Man.
