City will be without captain Vincent Kompany for Saturday's clash with Liverpool due to a calf injury.

Coutinho and compatriot Roberto Firmino returned to Melwood on Thursday morning along with the majority of Liverpool's global contingent.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed he engaged in a "really good conversation" with Philippe Coutinho, but the player is not expected to be considered against Manchester City.

However Klopp insists that the 25-year-old will sit out Saturday's trip at the Etihad Stadium as he aims to redevelop his match fitness levels.

Klopp claimed his decision had been given the green light by Coutinho, who submitted an official transfer request last month as he sought a move to Barcelona.

Klopp is likely to name a similar team at City to the one that beat Arsenal a fortnight ago, though he knows someone will have to make way for Coutinho at some point and does not see any problem with resentment within the dressing room.

The £215m paid for the likes of Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva means there are no excuses for Guardiola after a trophyless first season in England. "I said, if you look left and right, there is pure quality and if you are smart enough to address this quality, then we can be successful this season".

"Pre-season, we took care of him and he played all three games".

Klopp said: "Maybe a few of you have had a split in a good relationship, with your friends, wife or whatever, and it is not good to think about the time you were split". I don't know what will happen in the winter time. "We tried everything to organise as good as possible, as comfortable as possible, which is quite hard in a week like this", Klopp said at the pre-match press conference on Friday.

On a more positive note for the City manager, midfielder Ilkay Guendogan is available for selection after an extended layoff with a knee injury.

Raheem Sterling also recently picked up a red card so he won't be able to play against his former club.

In attack, City also did not manage to acquire Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez, following the Gunners' failure to sign his replacement in Monaco's Thomas Lemar.

"I have said it a few times - I can not keep all players happy each second of the day", the Grman added.
