Unemployment rates were mostly down in August in the Central Valley, according to the state Employment Development Department.

Nationally, the unemployment rate is 4.4 percent.

Pennsylvania's nonfarm jobs count was down 8,000 from July's record high to 5,953,700 in August. "Nevertheless, due to a decline in the state's labor force, the unemployment rate fell to 4.8 percent".

IDES spokesman Bob Gough said there also was a loss of 3,700 nonfarm jobs in August, based on data provided by the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Maryland labor officials say Maryland outpaced nationwide employment growth by a factor of five in August. "This growth was concentrated in the private sector, with three industries adding more than 1,000 jobs each", said Labor Economist, Emilie Doerksen.

The figures reflect the steady job gains nationwide that have fueled the eight-year long economic recovery from the Great Recession. Boise (up 0.8 percent), Coeur d'Alene and Pocatello (0.5 percent) MSAs together saw nonfarm job increases of 3,000. Over the year, the state's nonfarm payroll jobs were up 2.2 percent with a net gain of 15,200 jobs.

Department analysts classified 5,272 of Idaho's 24,000 online job postings for August as hard-to-fill.
