One quick step and Gordon, the third-year running back for the Los Angeles Chargers, was deep into the secondary for a 21-yard gain.

The rivalry between the two teams dates all the way back to the old AFL in 1950.

Denver took a 24-7 lead into the fourth quarter in this opener and the Broncos were feeling pretty good. The Broncos won seven in a row from November, 1975 to December, 1978.

Today's game between the Denver Broncos and the LA Chargers has a scheduled start time of 10.20 p.m. ET and can be watched on TV on the ESPN network.

Anthony Lynn became the first Chargers head coach to not win his debut since Marty Schottenheimer in 2002.

On Monday, the Broncos limited Los Angeles to well below that mark. He had thrown for just 60 yards, with a touchdown to go with an interception. After trading punts, Philip Rivers and the offense had two minutes and one time out to drive down the field. They came out swinging and scored right out of the gate with a touchdown pass to Bennie Fowler.

"He said the guard was probably going to lean on him to prevent that so I would have an opportunity to get in there", said Harris, who blocked the kick with two fingers on his right hand.

So thin were the Broncos along the defensive line that they had to call Tyrique Jarrett, an undrafted rookie, up from the practice squad to add precious depth.

But the contest was a far bigger headache than what might have been expected, starting as the third quarter drew to a close.

REASON TO WORRY: Depth on the defensive front might be a cause for concern.

Anthony Lynn and Vance Joseph will be making their National Football League head coaching debuts in prime time. And Rivers then heaved one deep for his only 15-plus yard completion of the night. On the next play, Rivers connected with a streaking Travis Benjamin, who got behind safety Darian Stewart, for the touchdown with 7:00 remaining.

Even NFL officials are still getting used to the idea of the? Denver outside linebacker Von Miller is a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks and offensive linemen alike. Zach Kerr, a free-agent acquisition from Indianapolis, also was inactive. Conversely, the Broncos' offense still has plenty of room for improvement. They have start wide receivers, but no real quarterback to consistently throw them the ball.

On his way into the end zone, Siemian faked his way past Bosa, who fell down trying to change direction as the quarterback got by him.

Justin Tucker kicked Baltimore into a 3-0 lead in the first quarter before Joe Flacco found Jeremy Maclin for a 48-yard touchdown, with Terrance West running in to extend their advantage to 17-0 at half-time.

The Broncos have two of the best receivers in football in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Melvin Gordon ran for 58-yards on 18 carries.
