NC elections officials: State not targeted in Russian hack

Elections officials say Russian hackers targeting election systems across the United States a year ago skipped North Carolina with their cyberattacks.

Gov. Spencer Cox told the Associated Press that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security informed his office Friday that hackers did not breach or attempt to breach any state or local elections systems in Utah. The state's system blocked the IP addresses completing the scans.

No breach occurred, Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon said in a news release.

Wisconsin was one of 21 states notified Friday of the attempted hacking.

The disclosure to the states comes as a special counsel probes whether there was any coordination during the 2016 presidential campaign between Russian Federation and associates of President Donald Trump.

Washington state uses the updated software and "best practices and security measures" to try to ensure honest elections, she said.

Wisconsin and Washington state officials say Homeland Security reported Russian hackers unsuccessfully tried to access election systems in their states.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission could soon decide whether it will respond to a series of election policy questions posed by President Trump's task force that is investigating voter fraud.
