Pressure on CBSE to act against Ryan International

Accused bus conductor Ashok Kumar in police custody at Sona in Gurgaon on Saturday

Totally shocked, horrified, dismayed by the brutal murder of a seven year old child at the Ryan International School, Gurugram & a rape of a three year old by a peon in another school in the national capital. The hearing will take place on Tuesday.

The Ryan International School management informed parents that it is to remain closed for two days "to express our solidarity with the parents and family of the child" although reports suggest that the closing of the school is due to violent protests by parents and locals.

The murder, in connection with which a bus conductor has been arrested, has triggered a huge public outrage.

"We accept negligence on part of the Ryan International School but the school can not be derecognised as the future of 1200 students is at stake", Education minister Ram Bilas Sharma said. The police are also questioning a driver, gardener and a few others to find if the conductor had accomplices.

The conductor, Ashok (42), who had been working for the school for the past eight months, first tried to sexually assault the child before mercilessly killing him when he resisted, the police had said.

The 7-year-old Pradhumn Thakur was found murdered with his throat slit open in the school washroom by fellow school students.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has called the victim's family and his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar and demanded a swift probe into the incident. At least 50 people, including nine scribes and photo journalists, were injured on Sunday when police baton-charged the group of protestors outside the school building located in Bhondsi on Sohna road.

The safety lapses in a well-resourced school in the National Capital Region raise serious questions on basic infrastructure and protocols - rather, the lack of them - in the country's schools. The Supreme Court should frame guidelines to eradicate security lapses in school, and legal action should be taken immediately.

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued notice to the Centre, the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Haryana government, the Central Bureau of Secondary Education and the Human Resource Development Ministry on a plea filed by the child's father Varun Thakur to seek a CBI probe into the murder.

An SIT team has reached Mumbai to interrogate school CEO Ryan Pinto and director Albert Pinto. The police department is interrogating to other teachers for the case.
