Sadio Mane named Premier League's Player of the Month for August

Sergio Aguero opens the scoring for Manchester City against Liverpool

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has been crowned Premier League player of the month for August.

Mane overcame a long-term knee injury to return to action for the Reds midway through pre-season, and has hit the ground running.

These included a stunning solo effort in the 3-3 draw away to the Hornets, and a 73rd-minute victor in the 1-0 victory over the Palace at Anfield.

He beat off competition from Manchester United trio Phil Jones, Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Chelsea's Alvaro Morata, Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and fellow Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah.

The 25-year-old winger was a key element in Liverpool's games throughout August, scoring three goals against in three Premier League games and delivering one assist in the Champions League playoffs against Hoffenheim.

Given Mane's excellent start to the campaign, however, it is unlikely this will be the final recognition the Reds receive in 2017/18. "Everyone loves to score goals for their team, and it gives me more confidence".

Now just two points off leaders Manchester United, Liverpool will be aiming to potentially leapfrog their north-west rivals on Saturday in an away clash with Manchester City, a side aiming to do the exact same thing.
