Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate closes ahead of Hurricane Irma

The Colony Hotel expects most guests to have cleared out before Hurricane Irma’s predicted landfall

With Hurricane Irma on course to impact Florida by the weekend, the storm is projected to hit close to home for President Donald Trump, literally.

The safety and security of [Mar-A-Lago] guests, members and colleagues is our top priority, and we are closely monitoring Hurricane Irma.

On Friday, officials in Palm Beach County ordered 125,000 residents to evacuate from low-lying areas near Lake Okeechobee, areas along the Intracoastal Waterway, and the barrier islands just off the coast.

Florida Governor Rick Scott has urged the state's residents to heed evacuation warnings.

The 5 p.m. advisory shows Hurricane Irma is slowly moving away from Cuba as a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour, according to the NHC. "It really beat up Mar-a-Lago very badly".

The chance that Irma will hit Florida "continues to increase", the National Weather Service says, though it's too early to indicate the timing and extent of the damage.

Trump's Mar-A-Lago resort has survived through hurricanes before.

Trump has repeatedly returned to his Mar-a-Lago property since becoming president, both to relax and to conduct state business.

Mar-a-Lago is located in a coastal county in southeast Florida that sees regular tidal flooding and has withstood multiple storms since it was built in 1927.

The hurricane's storm surge may do some damage though.

This place will not move.

On Wednesday morning Hurricane Irma slammed through the Caribbean island of St. Martin, where Trump owns a waterfront estate. The home, which Trump says he now rents out, is up for sale for $16.9 million - a price reduced from $28 million - but could be worth much less after Irma passes through.

On St. Martin, where the aforementioned Trump property resides, even the strongest structures were made vulnerable by Irma's powerful winds.

While the storm thrashes Florida and his properties, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will be with the president's cabinet in Camp David in Maryland.
