Grosjean baffled by Q1 crash at Suzuka

Romain Grosjean Haas F1 Team Japanese Grand Prix

He crashed against the wall and caused heavy damage to his vehicle, forcing the session to be red-flagged with less than two minutes remaining.

As a result, Grosjean ended the session 16th and was knocked out of qualifying.

Grosjean admitted his car's handling changed drastically in his second run in Q1, and said he had no clear explanation as to why he had crashed. I kept going and I went into [Turn] 3, but by the time I went into [Turn] 3 I just lost the rear and it was too late. I went faster than the previous lap, but slower than FP3.

"From FP3 to qualifying I think we made a really good choice technically, the auto felt really nice in that first run". I had a massive moment at Turn 11 and lost more than 0.5s, so I wasn't anxious that we would go through.

"I was sure we could go in the top ten". Honestly it's not crystal clear. "Yes, I pushed a bit more but we are talking little compared to the handling difference".

The Haas driver - who sustained a 15G impact in the crash which is his second in as many race weekends after his FP1 shunt in Malaysia - felt a potential top ten qualifying position was on thanks to the pace of his vehicle coupled with the grid penalties served by those ahead of him.

"I already had a big snap at Turn 1, I didn't really know where it came from".

"I'm sorry because honestly the vehicle had the pace to be in the top 10 today", he said. I really felt it in the first run. In the auto we added one percent of aero balance.

Grosjean could only qualify 16th, but will move up to 13th due to grid penalties for drivers ahead of him.

"I need to understand why it was so good on the first run but lost it on the second".

Romain Grosjean believes he was on course for a place in the top 10 shoot-out before his dramatic crash in Q1.

"I haven't heard the latest, but I think we are going to be fine and there's a few penalties in front of us so we can start 13th or something like that", he said. "We had to fly some new front suspension out after Malaysia which now we're ready to put on, but we had enough bodywork here".
