Trump's immigration plan shows he 'can't be serious,' say Schumer and Pelosi

White House Sends Congress Plans for Immigration Enforcement

DACA, created by former US President Barack Obama in 2012, protects by law young immigrants who were mostly raised in the US but arrived in the country undocumented.

Pelosi, who met with Trump last month and agreed over a dinner of Chinese food to work on a plan to protect dreamers, suggested Monday that the official White House proposals don't mirror the president's personal thinking.

Trump has given Congress six months to find a replacement for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA program.

Now the White House has sent congressional leaders a list of immigration demands that is nearly the complete opposite of what he told Democrats he was looking for in exchange for extending DACA.

Coupled with taking executive action against illegal immigrants, the Department of Homeland Security has also conducted nationwide raids in recent weeks and arrested about 500 illegal immigrants that it says have violated the law.

The principles Trump gave in an enclosed document were divided into two parts, namely border security and interior enforcement.

"So the president believes they should be allowed to stay", Kennedy responded.

Hours later, DHS moved to distance the administration from Dougherty's testimony. However, Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto has made clear on numerous occasions he did not agree with the wall and Mexico would offer no funds towards its construction. On the call, the official said: "We are not interested in granting citizenship".

"Congress should reject this warped, anti-immigrant policy wish list", said Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), who serves as vice chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Taking aim at long-standing legal immigration policies, Trump additionally called for an end to family-based immigration, which the administration claimed in a memo Sunday night is responsible for "most low-skilled immigration".

A report said that the merit-based system will benefit India as many Indian professionals will not have to wait for the green card.

The administration said asylum loopholes have also contributed to a "massive" backlog in the courts, where there are more than 270,000 pending asylum cases.

Since the Republican leadership is eager to surrender on DACA, and even the White House is probably willing to take something less than the full list they outlined Sunday, that means if there's no DACA fix passed by March (when DACA work permits start expiring at the rate of a few hundred a day), it will be the Democrats' intransigence that's the cause.

Responding to the general principles articulated at the hearing, Tillis said: "It reads like a laundry list for comprehensive immigration reform, and if Congress has proven an extraordinary ability to do anything, it's to fail at comprehensive immigration reform".

"The administration can't be serious about compromise or helping the Dreamers if they begin with a list that is anathema to the Dreamers, to the immigrant community and to the vast majority of Americans", they said on Sunday in a joint statement.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, for his part, urged Democrats to exercise "extreme caution" as they hammered out the details of the agreement, and warned that Trump would put in place a "cyber wall".

"I warned Democrats not to negotiate, to say that what we wanted was a clean Dream Act", he said.

President Donald Trump speaks to reporters in October before leaving the White House.
