According to Sports Illustrated's Bruce Feldman, Tennessee coach Butch Jones has been fired as the Vols head coach and informed his staff of the move on Sunday morning. The move has seemed nearly inevitable for weeks.

The Vols' late-season fade in 2016 turned up the heat on Jones. Hoke was serving as the defensive line coach at Tennessee and was the head coach at MI before Jim Harbaugh. The team also lost to SC and Kentucky (just their second loss to the Wildcats in 33 years) before getting a non-conference respite against Southern Miss.

The Vols lost to LSU in that season's SEC Championship and beat Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl.

Tennessee fans have been clamoring for Jones' firing for most of the season, but reached a fever pitch on September 30 when they were shut out by Georgia 41-0 at home. By the end of the Missouri game, Tennessee had only five available scholarship offensive linemen, including two true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen. He was making $4.11 million per year at Tennessee. "The Jones family has poured their heart and soul into this Tennessee football program and the Knoxville community".

This is Jones' fifth season on the job and shaping up to be his worst since he went 5-7 upon taking over in 2013.

"The major off-field issue during Jones' tenure was a Title IX lawsuit filed against the school a year ago by eight unidentified women accusing Tennessee of having a "hostile sexual environment" through a policy of indifference toward assaults by athletes".

Jones' squad has been outscored 206-79 in six league games this season.
